3RD ANNUAL MILLION CALORIE BURN 5K
Now in its 3rd year, the Million Calorie Burn has become known as the premier 5k walk/run supporting calorie reduction and physical activity for children and families in the Greater Memphis area. Started by Common Table Health Alliance in 2013, the Million Calorie Burn has encouraged hundreds of people to embrace better, smarter ways of healthy eating and active living. Last year, registrants burned over 500 calories per participant in the 5k, one-mile fun run, yoga and Zumba demonstrations, line dancing and other activities!
Several local nonprofit organizations in the Common Table’s community partner network also support healthy eating and active living in Shelby County. The 3rd Annual Million Calorie Burn will allow participants to choose from one of nine nonprofit running teams to support their organizational mission and their efforts in combating the obesity epidemic. The running teams represent a unique partnership of local nonprofit organizations collaborating to support calorie reduction and amplifying physical activity.
Proceeds from the Million Calorie Burn 5k will support each of the running teams’ commitment to making Memphis and Shelby County a healthier place to live, work and play. Register today! The first 500 participants to register will receive premium goody bags! Join Mayor Wharton and the running teams on October 10.
THE ISSUE: COMBATING FAMILY AND CHILDHOOD OBESITY
Memphis and Shelby County continue to be challenged by social and economic factors that drive many regional health indicators to the bottom third of most national and state health rankings. In addition, our obesity rates are some of the highest among children in the county, a key indicator of early diagnosis of juvenile diabetes. Improvements to diet and exercise are known to enhance the lives of patients suffering from high rates of chronic diseases.
Please visit the link for RacesOnline for Million Calorie Burn 5K to register for the race and to see more details about the event.
